Inspiration is in short supply. Only 20 percent of employees are “engaged” in their work. They are all looking for someone to believe in. As a leader, they should believe in you. After years of interviewing some of the top leaders of our day, I found that inspiring leaders share these secrets.
The 7 Secrets of Inspiring Leaders
1. Passion.
You cannot inspire unless you’re inspired yourself. Dig deep to identify what it is that you are truly passionate about and, once you do, share it with the rest of us. Jim Collins once wrote “Some managers are uncomfortable with expressing emotion about their dreams, but it’s passion and emotion that will attract and motivate others.”
2. Vision.
Inspiring leaders communicate a bold, specific, concise and consistent vision.
3. Benefits.
Inspiring leaders sell the benefit behind reaching their vision. Your listeners–employees or customers–are asking themselves one question: Why should I care?
4. Stories.
The most inspiring communicators tell stories. They tell stories in the workplace, in their marketing material, and in their presentations.
5. Participation.
Inspiring leaders go beyond “listening.” They invite participation in a three step process: Solicit input, listen to the feedback, and incorporate what they hear.
6. Optimism.
Inspiring leaders are more optimistic than average. They speak the language of hope. Always.
7. Encouragement.
Inspiring leaders encourage potential. When you’re in their presence, you think anything is possible.
You cannot be considered a true leader until you inspire the people around you. Once you do, it’s magical. Imagine what your world would be like when employees want to work for you, customers want to buy from you, and everyone is energized by your presence.
People want to follow inspiring leaders. Each of us should aspire to be an inspiration.
